NO MORE FUMBLING FOR KEYS: DID YOU KNOW THIS?

- Physical deadbolts are still my go-to, especially after seeing a few “smart” locks glitch out during power outages.
- Redundancy matters. If tech fails, you need a fallback.
- I’ve seen people lose access just because their phone died or the app crashed... not exactly ideal after a long day.
- Solar chargers sound clever but, like you said, most doorways just don’t get enough sun.
- Honestly, the more tech you add, the more things can go sideways. Convenience is great, but I’d rather not risk getting locked out in the rain.

Smart locks have their place, but I’ll always want a key in my pocket, just in case.

I hear you on the deadbolts. I’ve installed a fair share of smart locks for clients, and honestly, most still ask for a regular key backup. There’s something reassuring about that solid “click” when you lock up at night. Tech is cool—until your WiFi goes out or your phone battery taps out right as you get home with groceries. I like the idea of convenience, but I’m with you... nothing beats a good old-fashioned key tucked in your pocket (or, in my case, hidden under a suspiciously clean rock).

I get where you’re coming from. I’ve put in a handful of those smart locks myself, and I always tell folks—don’t ditch the backup key just yet. Battery dies, tech glitches, or even just a stubborn app can leave you standing on the porch. Tried and true keys still have their place, even if they’re hiding under that “totally not obvious” fake rock...

I get the caution, but honestly, I’ve seen more issues with lost keys than with smart lock failures. Here’s how I usually approach it: first, pick a lock with a physical override (most decent ones have this). Second, set up a battery reminder—some locks even send alerts when power’s low. Third, if you’re worried about tech glitches, keep a portable charger in your bag or car. I haven’t been locked out yet, but I do agree—maybe skip the fake rock. That thing fools no one...

- Had to laugh at this—walked into a client’s entryway last month and spotted a “rock” that looked like it belonged in a cartoon. Not exactly subtle.
- I’m with you on the physical override. I’ve recommended smart locks for a few projects, but always with a key backup tucked somewhere *inside* (not under the mat or in the garden gnome’s hat).
- Battery reminders are great, but I’ve seen people ignore them for weeks. One client had their lock chirping for days before it finally died—cue frantic calls and a locksmith visit.
- Portable charger is clever, though. Never thought of that for a door lock, but I guess if you’re already carrying one for your phone, why not?
- Still, there’s something about having an actual key hidden away (just not in plain sight). Maybe it’s old-school paranoia, but tech can be finicky—especially when you’re running late or juggling groceries.

Curious if anyone’s found a really elegant way to store backup keys indoors? Most solutions I’ve seen are either ugly or obvious...
