Need advice on replacing an old leaky roof

So my roof has finally decided it's had enough of life and started leaking in a couple spots during the last heavy rain. It's pretty old, probably 20+ years, so I guess it's about time. I'm not exactly swimming in cash right now, but I also don't want to cheap out and regret it later, you know? Anyone been through this recently and have suggestions on materials or contractors that are reliable but won't totally empty my wallet?

I went with ridge vents, mostly because I got a deal on them and my attic was basically a sauna. You’re right about the soffit vents—mine were packed with old insulation, so I had to clear those out first. My decking’s the old plank kind too, and yeah, there are gaps. I just layered some thicker felt underlayment and crossed my fingers... so far, so good, but I’m always half-expecting to find a squirrel in the attic.
