if you don’t get the base right, you’ll regret it. I skipped edging in one spot and now the gravel creeps into my sidewalk every time it rains.

That edging issue is a pain. I went with steel edging all around—cost a bit more, but it keeps everything sharp and contained. Honestly, the look is cleaner, and I don’t have to sweep gravel off the walkway every week. I do miss the look of a lush lawn, but the low maintenance is worth it. If you want a bit of green back, maybe try a few potted plants or a small artificial turf patch? Keeps things tidy without the hassle.

I went with aluminum edging after reading way too many horror stories about gravel migration. It’s held up well so far, but I do notice the occasional stray stone after heavy rain. I kind of miss mowing, weirdly enough… but not the weeds.

- Aluminum edging is a solid choice for keeping things in place, but yeah, even with that, some migration is inevitable with heavy rainfall.
- Have you tried a geotextile fabric under the gravel? It can help reduce both weed growth and stone sinking/migration over time.
- Curious—what gravel size did you go with? Finer stuff tends to move more, but bigger pieces can be a pain to walk on.

I went with 3/4" gravel, thinking it'd stay put better, but still find little rocks sneaking out onto the walkway after storms. I did use landscape fabric underneath, but honestly, not sure it's doing much besides making it harder for weeds to root. Anyone else notice the fabric doesn't really stop the gravel from shifting? Starting to wonder if all the effort is worth it compared to just dealing with patchy grass...

Landscape fabric’s always felt like a bit of a scam to me, honestly. I tried it under pea gravel in my side yard, and the rocks still wandered off every time it rained hard. The fabric just made it a pain to rake things back in place. What helped a bit was adding some kind of edging—like metal or even pressure-treated wood—to keep the gravel from escaping. Still, I’ll admit, sometimes I miss the look of grass, even if it was patchy and full of weeds. Gravel’s less mowing, but more sweeping... trade-offs everywhere.
