A closed wiring cabinet and an unstable network switch

An Ethernet link dropping now and then doesn’t tell me whether a switch in a closed structured-wiring cabinet is running too hot or whether the fault is in a cable, port, or the switch itself. What symptoms would help distinguish those possibilities?

Would you start by noting whether the drops affect several devices or just one run, then checking link indicators and the switch’s error counters? I’m also curious how much weight to put on a switch feeling unusually warm, and what safe checks are useful before replacing it. At what point would you improve cabinet ventilation or relocate the switch rather than keep troubleshooting the network?

A warm case by itself wouldn’t convince me to spend money on cabinet changes; it doesn’t show that heat is causing the dropouts. A stronger clue would be the temperature around the switch compared with its rated operating range, or dropouts that reliably happen under load and stop in a cooler location while the connections and load stay the same. Without that, ventilation or relocation risks treating the wrong problem.
