Seems like dense foliage is less of a problem than anything metal or concrete.

Yeah, I've found the same thing—leaves and bushes are annoying but nothing kills signal like a metal wall. Mapping signal at different heights was a game changer for me too. It’s wild how much difference a foot or two can make. Keep experimenting, you’re on the right track.

I’ve noticed the same thing—metal is brutal for wifi, especially those old corrugated steel sheds. I actually tried raising my access point by just a foot and suddenly the signal reached way further into the yard. If you’re up for it, have you tried using directional antennas or mesh nodes? I found that placing a mesh node near a window (instead of behind a wall) made a surprising difference, even with some trees in the way. Curious if anyone’s had luck with powerline adapters out to a shed... seems hit or miss from what I’ve read.

Metal sheds are a nightmare for wifi, no doubt. I’ve had better luck running ethernet out to the shed and then setting up a dedicated access point inside—powerline adapters were too unreliable for me, probably due to old wiring. Mesh nodes by the window definitely help, but nothing beats a hardwired connection if you can swing it.

Ethernet to the shed is definitely the gold standard, but I’ll admit, running cable wasn’t in my budget or my comfort zone (digging up the yard? Not happening). I tried powerline adapters too, but like you said, they were a bit hit-or-miss—think my 1970s wiring just isn’t up for it.

What actually worked for me was picking up a used mesh system off Craigslist and sticking one node as close to the shed window as possible. The signal’s not perfect, but I can stream music and get work done out there. For $40, I’m calling it a win. If you’re willing to tinker, sometimes a cheap WiFi repeater in a weatherproof box outside the house can help bridge the gap too.

Honestly, there’s always some tradeoff between cost and reliability. If money was no object, I’d trench ethernet in a heartbeat... but for now, patching together old gear gets me by.

I hear you on the trenching—when I built my little backyard office, I thought about running ethernet too, but the idea of tearing up my native plant beds just didn’t sit right. Plus, I’m not exactly handy with a shovel. I tried a solar-powered WiFi repeater mounted under the eaves, mostly because I wanted to avoid running more wires or using extra electricity. It was a bit of a science experiment, honestly. The signal’s not as rock-solid as a direct line, but it’s good enough for video calls and streaming podcasts while I work.

One thing I noticed: the more I insulated the shed (recycled denim batts, if you’re curious), the more it seemed to block the signal. Ended up cracking a window sometimes just to get a better connection. Not ideal, but it works for now. There’s always a balance between sustainability, cost, and convenience... and sometimes you just have to get creative with what you’ve got lying around.
