RE: Finally built my ultra-efficient dream home
The warning about poor commissioning leading to noise and drafts is the part I’d want to verify before judging the system. What measurements or checks would you use after installation to confirm that each room is getting...

RE: Weighing the pros and cons of switching to a 15-year mortgage
WEIGHING THE PROS AND CONS OF SWITCHING TO A 15-YEAR MORTGAGE I totally get the “forced savings” thing - the only way I ever managed to put money aside was by making it automatic or, like, non-negotiable. When we looked...
RE: Digging up the backyard: found more than just dirt
Yeah, that’s the truth. I’ve heard stories where someone just wanted to plant a tree and ended up finding buried bricks, old pipes, even weird glass bottles. It’s wild what’s under there sometimes. I get the temptation t...
RE: Anyone else feel awkward talking to their TV?
I’ve wondered the same thing. I tried using voice commands to turn off my TV when my hands were full, but it just didn’t get it. Ended up fumbling for the remote anyway. Does anyone actually use these features for stuff ...
RE: Anyone else feel awkward talking to their TV?
I get the nostalgia for the old remotes, but I actually like the idea of voice controls - at least from an energy-saving angle. Fewer batteries, less plastic, maybe even less e-waste if we get it right. Sure, it’s awkwar...
RE: Making the switch to water-saving toilets: Worth it?
MAKING THE SWITCH TO WATER-SAVING TOILETS: WORTH IT? I hear you on the seat design - some of them are just... weirdly shaped? I swapped mine out a couple years ago and honestly, the water bill dropped more than I expect...
RE: Finally upgraded my living room lights - anyone else tried smart bulbs?
Yeah, that's a fair point. I live in an older place with thick plaster walls, and Wi-Fi can definitely be a bit... temperamental. I've been curious if adding a hub would help, but honestly, the idea of another gadget clu...
RE: Looking for affordable land - any hidden gems?
Yeah, been there myself - beautiful spot, but the internet thing drove me nuts. One workaround I've seen work pretty well is investing in satellite internet or even checking if local providers offer fixed wireless. Also,...
RE: Figuring out the right lot size without losing your mind
Yeah, I remember those calculator days too...felt like I was back in high school math class every time I opened a trade. Haven't tried the MT4 indicator yet though - does it ever glitch or give weird lot sizes? Might hav...
RE: Buying a piece of land - just a handshake deal or paperwork essential?
Yeah, I get that... when we put in our solar panels, we had a casual agreement with the neighbor about trimming some trees. Worked great until they moved and the new folks weren't so keen. Definitely wish we'd gotten som...
RE: My Adventure With DIY Concrete Foundations
Haha, bamboo stakes for concrete forms...that's brave. I've experimented with bamboo for garden trellises and even then it surprised me how much flex it had. Curious though - did you notice any cracking afterward from th...
RE: Struggling to keep walls straight when building with lumber
Yeah, I've run into that warping issue myself a few times. Have you tried looking into sustainably sourced kiln-dried lumber? It's usually more stable, and the environmental aspect is a nice bonus...might help balance ch...
RE: Construction's done, now what - stick with builder's lender or shop around?
Good advice overall, though I think it really depends on your priorities. I've seen people stick with the builder's lender because the convenience factor is huge - especially if you're juggling a million other things at ...
RE: Construction's done, now what - stick with builder's lender or shop around?
Good point about balancing short-term vs long-term. Curious though, did anyone here factor in sustainability incentives or green financing options when deciding on lenders? I recently heard some banks offer better rates ...
