Best ways to check soil density on a tight budget?
Discussion options
I'm working on this small backyard patio project and wanna make sure the ground underneath is properly compacted. But renting those fancy machines seems overkill (and pricey) for this lil' job. Any DIY methods or cheap hacks you folks have tried?

- Before choosing a DIY check, what soil type are you dealing with, and how thick will the patio’s compacted base be?
- For sandy or gravelly soil with a modest base, a hand test plus checking for consistent firmness may be enough for a small patio. Clay or mixed fill is less forgiving, especially under a thicker base, so a basic density test rental could be worthwhile even if the project is small.
- Are you building on undisturbed soil, or was the area previously filled?
