WEEKEND CRAFTS: DO YOU PREFER BUILDING FROM SCRATCH OR UPCYCLING OLD STUFF?

That’s not just you—happens to me more than I’d like to admit. Upcycling sounds great until you’re halfway through and realize you’ve spent hours just getting the old paint off or pulling out weird hardware. Sometimes it’s just easier (and honestly, cheaper) to start with new materials. Still, there’s a certain satisfaction in making something unique out of stuff that would’ve ended up in a landfill. Guess it depends on how much time and patience you’ve got that weekend.

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve lost count of how many times I thought I’d save money by upcycling, only to end up knee-deep in sanding dust and weird screws that don’t fit anything. Still, there’s something kinda cool about giving old stuff a new life, even if it takes twice as long as you planned. Sometimes you just want a quick win, though, and new materials are way less hassle. It’s all about picking your battles, I guess.

Honestly, I’m all about upcycling if it means I don’t have to drop cash on new wood or hardware. But yeah, half the time I end up making three trips to the hardware store anyway because something’s missing or broken. Still, I get a weird satisfaction from making something out of junk—like, “look what I did with $5 and a busted chair.” That said, if I actually need it done fast (or to look halfway decent), new materials are just less headache. It’s a toss-up for me.

I totally get that—upcycling feels like a win when you pull it off, but sometimes it’s just more work than starting fresh. I tried turning an old door into a coffee table last month and ended up with sawdust everywhere and a table that wobbles if you breathe near it. Still, there’s something cool about giving old stuff a second life. Do you ever find yourself mixing both? Like, using some new hardware with old wood or vice versa?

Honestly, that’s half the fun—embracing the chaos. I actually prefer upcycling, even if it’s messier. There’s a story in every scratch and dent. New materials can feel a bit soulless sometimes, you know? Mixing both is cool, but I’d rather wrestle with the quirks of old stuff than start with a blank slate.
