How do you handle surprise costs without wrecking your finances?

I've been trying to get better at planning for those random expenses that pop up, like car repairs or vet visits... First, I started setting aside a small amount each paycheck into a separate savings account. Then, I tried keeping track of past surprise bills to estimate how much I'd need. It's kinda working, but sometimes still feels shaky. Curious if someone has a smarter or easier way they deal with this stuff?

That’s pretty much how I’m approaching it, too. We had to ditch our dream flooring when the HVAC needed a surprise overhaul—definitely not as fun, but necessary. I do wonder if there’s ever a “right” time for upgrades, or if it’s always just a moving target. Sometimes living with the basics for a while actually helps clarify what you really want anyway.
