Seriously, why do online forms have to be so confusing? I just wanted to sign up for a newsletter and suddenly I'm being asked for my mother's maiden name, favorite color, and like, three different passwords. Is it just me or are these things getting worse?
TITLE: Why Does Everything Have To Be So Complicated To Fill Out?
It’s definitely gotten more convoluted, but I’m not totally convinced it’s all unnecessary. I get the frustration when you just want a newsletter and suddenly it feels like you’re applying for a mortgage. But from the other side, companies are under a lot more pressure with data privacy and security these days. If someone hacks their system, they need to be able to verify identities, hence all those “secret questions.” Still, I agree—it’s overkill for a simple newsletter.
I’ve noticed a big difference depending on the site. Some are streamlined—just an email and you’re done. Others, especially bigger brands, pile on the fields and it slows everything down. It makes me wonder if they’re just collecting data for marketing, or if it’s really about security. I guess it’s a bit of both.
Honestly, I find it even more annoying when forms try to be “smart” and autofill or correct things. Half the time, it guesses wrong and I have to start over. There was this one property listing site I used last month—took me ten minutes to get through their registration because it kept flagging my perfectly normal address as invalid. Ended up using a fake one just to get past the gatekeeper.
Maybe there’s a balance out there, but I haven’t seen it yet. Would be nice if companies matched the level of form complexity to what you’re actually signing up for. Until then, I guess we’ll just keep inventing new “favorite colors” and pretending our first pet was named something weird just to get that free download.

That’s exactly it. If I’m buying a box of screws online, I don’t need to give them my life story. Just let me check out and move on. Even applying for permits or warranties on tools gets ridiculous—half the time I end up double-checking what info they actually need versus what’s just marketing fluff.
I’ve started making a checklist before I fill anything out: 1) Is this info really required? 2) Can I skip optional fields? 3) Will autofill mess this up and make me redo it? Makes things a bit quicker, but still feels like overkill for simple stuff.
Curious if anyone’s found a site that actually does things right—where the process is as straightforward as, say, walking into a hardware store and grabbing what you need. Or is this just the new normal?
I’ve wondered the same thing. Honestly, I haven’t found a site that nails it—maybe Amazon comes closest for basic stuff, but even they sneak in extra steps sometimes. Local hardware store websites are usually worse, if anything. I get that companies want data, but does anyone really need my birthday to sell me a hammer?
Title: Why Does Everything Have To Be So Complicated To Fill Out?
I’m right there with you both. The amount of hoops just to get a simple thing done is getting out of hand. Here’s what I’ve noticed:
- Security questions are out of control. I get wanting to protect accounts, but do I really need to remember which street my childhood best friend lived on? Half the time, I make up answers because who’s going to hack my newsletter subscription?
- Password requirements are another headache. Some sites want uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols, and then they tell you not to use anything you’ve ever used before. At this point, I’m running out of creative ideas that aren’t just random gibberish.
- The “optional” fields that aren’t actually optional. If you’re going to require my phone number or birthday, just say so—don’t pretend it’s for my benefit.
I tried signing up for a home decor catalog last week and it felt like applying for a mortgage. They wanted my address (fine), but then also asked about household income and whether I owned pets. Not sure how that’s relevant unless they’re planning on sending me dog couches.
Honestly, the only places that seem to get it right are the high-end design brands—usually just an email and done. Maybe they figure if you’re buying a $10k sofa, you don’t have time for nonsense.
Anyway, it’s not just you. It’s like every site is competing to see who can make things more convoluted. At this rate, I half expect someone to ask for a DNA sample before letting me buy throw pillows online...
