Choosing between energy efficiency or water savings for green building points?

We went through the same debate when building—energy or water? Ended up prioritizing water savings because our summers are brutal and restrictions are common. Swapping out the lawn for native stuff took patience, but it’s way less stress now. Energy upgrades are great, but honestly, you can always add more insulation or panels later. Water’s harder to fix after the fact. If you’re in a dry area, I’d lean water first.

CHOOSING BETWEEN ENERGY EFFICIENCY OR WATER SAVINGS FOR GREEN BUILDING POINTS?

- I get the logic behind prioritizing water, especially if you’re in a drought-prone spot. Still, I’ve seen projects where energy costs ballooned way past what folks expected, and retrofitting for efficiency later was a pain.
- Water systems can be tough to overhaul, but things like rainwater capture or greywater setups aren’t impossible to add down the line either—just more hassle.
- Curious, did you factor in long-term utility rates? Sometimes energy spikes outpace water costs, depending on where you are.
- Anyone run into code issues when switching to native landscaping or alternative water systems? That’s tripped up a few clients of mine.

CHOOSING BETWEEN ENERGY EFFICIENCY OR WATER SAVINGS FOR GREEN BUILDING POINTS?

Had a project last year where we leaned hard into water savings—xeriscaping, low-flow everything, the works—because the site was in a pretty dry area. But honestly, the energy bills ended up being the bigger shock. Retrofitting for better insulation and HVAC later was way more disruptive than I expected. If I had to do it again, I’d probably tackle energy first, unless water’s a real crisis for that location. Local codes were a headache with the greywater system too... lots of back and forth with inspectors.

That’s honestly my biggest worry too—budget just doesn’t stretch as far as I want, and I’m always torn about which side to prioritize. Did you find the up-front costs for the water-saving stuff were lower than the energy upgrades? I keep looking at the price tags and thinking, “Well, a low-flow toilet is cheap now, but how much is it really saving me compared to better windows or insulation?”

And then there’s the whole local code circus... I swear, every time someone says “greywater system,” my wallet starts sweating. Was it worth all that hassle in the end? Or did you feel like the inspectors just made things harder than they needed to be?

I get wanting to do what’s right for the environment, but sometimes it feels like you need a crystal ball (and a bigger bank account) to know what’s going to pay off first.

Man, I hear you on the code circus—when I tried to get a rainwater catchment system signed off, it turned into a six-month headache and a stack of paperwork. Energy stuff like insulation and windows felt expensive up front, but at least the process was clear. Water-saving gadgets are cheap, but anything more complicated than a low-flow showerhead gets tangled in red tape fast. If I had to do it again, I’d probably focus on energy first—less hassle, and the savings show up quicker on the bills.
