Open shelves are such a trap, right? I built my own kitchen and thought, “Yeah, I’ll keep it all neat—looks amazing in the plans.” Fast forward six months, and those shelves were basically a graveyard for mismatched mugs and random gadgets.

Totally get this. I fell hard for the open shelving trend—looked so chic in all the glossy spreads. In reality, my “curated” plates quickly turned into a collection of chipped bowls and an embarrassing number of souvenir cups. It’s wild how fast practicality takes over. Honestly, I think it’s normal to regret going too trendy sometimes. The trick is figuring out what actually fits your day-to-day life instead of just chasing the latest look. But hey, at least you know now what works for you. That’s half the battle.

That’s honestly the key. I got sucked into the “minimalist” kitchen thing, too—open shelves, no upper cabinets, all that. Looked great for about a week, then reality hit. If you’re thinking about hiring someone to design your space, I’d say make a list of what you actually use every day. It sounds boring, but it saves money and headaches later. Trends are fun, but living with them is a whole different story.

I get where you’re coming from. I tried the “magazine look” once and ended up shoving half my stuff in random baskets because there was nowhere to put it. But how do you even know what’s worth splurging on with a designer? Like, is it better to focus on storage or just make peace with clutter? I always wonder if designers actually listen to what you need, or just push their own style...

Funny you mention that—one designer tried to convince me I needed an “accent wall” made of reclaimed wood. Cool, but not when you’ve got allergies and a budget. I’d say splurge on storage that works for your stuff, not just what looks good in photos. Otherwise you’ll end up with baskets everywhere like I did...

I ran into something similar when I was looking for someone to help with my remodel. The first designer I met was obsessed with these “statement” features—like a giant glass wall and open shelving everywhere. Looked cool, but I kept thinking about how much dust would collect, and how little insulation there’d be. Ended up finding someone who actually asked about my habits (like, where I pile my mail, or if I cook a lot), and that made all the difference. If they’re not asking about your lifestyle, it’s probably not going to end well...
