Finding the Right Person to Help Design Our Space

I totally get that feeling - when we redid our kitchen, the sheer number of options for cabinets alone was dizzying. We considered hiring a designer but ultimately went DIY because we enjoy the process (mostly!). One thing I wondered about though: how do you balance your own style preferences with a designer's recommendations? Curious if anyone found it tricky to keep their personal vision intact while working with a professional.

Keeping your personal vision intact is much easier when you test that working relationship before signing anything. Since you mentioned wondering how designers’ recommendations fit with a client’s style, I’d ask prospective designers:

1. How do you handle disagreements about layout, materials, or budget?
2. How do you document and prioritize a client’s must-haves?
3. Can you show an example where you changed your initial recommendation to meet a client’s requirements?
4. Who makes the final decision if we still don’t agree?

I’d also give them a short list of non-negotiables, such as cabinet storage, seating capacity, or specific finishes, and ask them to explain which items they’d preserve and which they’d challenge. Their response will reveal more than a portfolio. A good designer should be able to explain the technical reason for a recommendation without treating your preferences as obstacles.
