“if you plan it out in layers, even a mostly native, untamed garden can look intentional. Think: taller grasses or shrubs in the back, mid-height perennials in the middle, groundcovers up front.”

That’s a great point about layering. I’m still pretty new to all this—just moved into my first place last year—and I’ve been surprised by how much difference a little structure makes. I started out thinking I wanted everything super tidy and low-maintenance, but after seeing how quickly the “perfect” look gets messed up by weather or just time, I’m starting to appreciate a bit of wildness.

I do get nervous about things looking neglected though. There’s that fine line where it goes from “natural” to “no one cares.” What’s helped me is picking a few anchor plants that stay neat (like evergreen shrubs) and then letting the native stuff fill in around them. It gives the impression that there’s a plan, even if things are a bit unruly in spots.

About the bugs—yeah, water features are tricky. I put in a small birdbath and was worried about mosquitoes, but like you mentioned, more birds and dragonflies showed up than I expected. The dragonflies especially seem to patrol the area pretty aggressively. Not a total fix for mosquitoes, but it helps.

I guess for me it’s about finding that balance you mentioned: enough order that it doesn’t look abandoned, but not so much that it feels sterile or forced. Still figuring it out as I go... sometimes I just move things around until it looks right from the kitchen window. Maybe that’s as scientific as it needs to be?
