WHEN “SMART” DEVICES AREN’T SO SMART AFTER ALL
Honestly, sometimes I just want to flip a switch and have it work, no app required.
Couldn’t agree more. Here’s what I’ve run into:
- Half the time, the “smart” stuff needs an update or loses WiFi. Then you’re stuck staring at a spinning wheel instead of just turning on the heat.
- Had a smart lock once. Locked myself out during a power outage. Old-school key never failed me like that.
- Some of these systems feel like they’re made for people who want to tinker, not actually live in the house.
- There’s a reason the classic light switch hasn’t changed much in decades—it just works.
I get the appeal of automation, but if it takes longer to set up and maintain than it saves me, what’s the point? Sometimes I think these companies forget most of us just want things to be reliable, not “smart.”

Honestly, I keep thinking about this every time my “smart” thermostat decides to disconnect. I get the energy-saving angle, but if I’m freezing at 2am because of a glitch, it’s not worth it. Sometimes low-tech is just less stressful.
