Had a client who insisted on smart bulbs everywhere—looked amazing, but every time the WiFi hiccuped, chaos. Ended up layering regular dimmers as a backup. Sometimes, less is more, especially if you want your space to actually feel relaxing.

Honestly, this is why I always recommend a hybrid setup—smart bulbs are cool, but relying solely on WiFi for basic lighting is risky. If you want to keep things green and functional, try using smart switches instead of just bulbs. They work even if the network drops, and you can still control them manually. Also, mesh WiFi helps with stability, but nothing beats having a good old-fashioned switch as backup. Learned that the hard way after a power outage left me in the dark... literally.

I’ve started recommending people keep at least one or two rooms on traditional switches, just in case. It’s not as flashy, but it saves a lot of headaches.

Funny enough, I once had a client who wanted voice-activated everything—lights, blinds, even the coffee maker. Looked great on paper until their internet went down for a day and they couldn’t even make coffee without digging out the manual override. Sometimes “smart” just means more points of failure...

Step one: Always start with the basics. Hardwired switches and outlets are your foundation. If you want smart features, look for switches that have both manual and app control. That way, if the network goes down, you’re not stuck in the dark (literally).

Step two: For lighting, I’ve found that mixing in a few smart bulbs is fine—maybe in accent lamps or spots where you want color control—but don’t rely on them for your main lights. Too many times, I’ve seen people get frustrated when a firmware update or WiFi dropout leaves them fumbling for a workaround.

Step three: Redundancy is your friend. I know it’s tempting to automate everything, but if you can’t make coffee or open the blinds without an app, it’s probably overkill. I always suggest keeping at least one “old school” option in every room. It’s not just about convenience; it’s about safety too.

Step four: Mesh WiFi helps, but like you said, it’s not magic. There’s always going to be a weird dead zone or a time when the router just decides to take a nap. I usually recommend running ethernet to key devices if possible—especially for things like security cameras or smart hubs.

This is spot on. I once installed a bunch of smart plugs for my workshop lights—looked cool until the WiFi glitched during a storm and I had to stumble around with a flashlight. Never again... now every “smart” thing has a dumb backup.
